Effective waste disposal may have a wide range of effects on society. Improper waste management, storage, and transportation have resulted in severe environmental and economic consequences. Recycling has a plethora of socioeconomic benefits. Segregating waste materials requires thinking that necessitates essential leadership skills, resulting in a collaborative effort to protect the environment.
The staff of CJFI Pampanga demonstrated ways to segregate and clean the environment on April 1, 2021- Encouraging children to execute at the same time. The Residential Social Worker, Ms. Daphnee Lorraine A. Marinas, had a small orientation with the children in the morning. There were four (4) drums used to segregate wastes with their designated labels: 1. Nabubulok (Biodegradable) left foods, peeling of vegetables and fruits, dried grass and leaves, and small branches. 2. Di Nabubulok (Non-Biodegradable) consists of plastics, diapers, sanitary napkins, bottles, and cans. 3. Nare-resiklo (Recyclable) like papers and cartons. Lastly, 4 Toxic Hazardous Waste, such as paints, batteries, bulbs, and electrical wastes.
And to break the ice, they were given a chance to do such exciting activity with staff. Everyone got their cleaning materials; brooms and dustpans. They readied their OOTDs or Outfit of the Day by wearing rubber boots, hats, and long sleeves, to prevent sunburn. The children wished to eat their food outside to feel the picnic vibes they had before. Something they longed for since the implementation of lockdown within the community. Children enjoyed their lunch under the guava tree, bringing their tables, monoblock chairs, plates, spoon, fork, and food.
After consuming the food for lunch, the children and the staff took group photos, documenting before and after the transformation of the clean-up activity. The activity ends at 1:00 in the afternoon, after the kids put the things they use back to their proper places.
Teaching children to be responsible in recycling and waste management gives them a sense of responsibility and consistency. As a result, children were delighted, satisfied, and felt proud to spend a productive day. They became more mindful of segregating and taking care of the ecosystem for the welfare of all existing life forms.
